Lemon Squeezy vs Gumroad: Two Merchants of Record Compared
Lemon Squeezy and Gumroad are two of the most popular platforms for selling digital products, and they share something important: both operate as Merchants of Record. That means both process payments on your behalf, and in neither case do you own the payment relationship. Most comparisons gloss over this. This guide puts it front and center, with a full breakdown of pricing, features, and tax handling.

Lemon Squeezy vs Gumroad at a glance
Both platforms let you sell digital products without writing code, and both act as the Merchant of Record on every transaction. The differences are in pricing, product scope, and how deeply each handles tax compliance.
| Category | Lemon Squeezy | Gumroad |
|---|---|---|

Pricing compared
Both use a percentage-per-sale model with no monthly subscription, but the percentages are meaningfully different — and those differences compound as your volume grows.
Lemon Squeezy pricing
As of 2026, Lemon Squeezy charges 5% + $0.50 per sale. No monthly subscription, no tiered pricing. Payment processing is included because Lemon Squeezy acts as the Merchant of Record — you do not connect a separate Stripe account. The rate is the same regardless of how the buyer found you (Lemon Squeezy does not operate a discovery marketplace).
Gumroad pricing
Gumroad charges 10% + $0.50 per sale. No monthly subscription, and processing is included. One caveat: sales through the Gumroad Discover marketplace cost 30% instead of 10%. The marketplace can bring organic traffic, but at a significantly higher per-sale cost.
Fee examples: what you keep
Here is what each platform charges at common price points. Both include processing.
| Sale price | Lemon Squeezy fee (5% + $0.50) | You keep | Gumroad fee (10% + $0.50) | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $10 | $1.00 | $9.00 | $1.50 | $8.50 |
| $25 | $1.75 | $23.25 | $3.00 | $22.00 |
| $50 | $3.00 | $47.00 | $5.50 | $44.50 |
| $100 | $5.50 | $94.50 | $10.50 | $89.50 |
Lemon Squeezy is cheaper per sale at every price point. On a $100 product, the difference is $5.00 per transaction — that compounds quickly at scale. Neither platform charges a separate processing fee. With platforms that let you connect your own Stripe, you would typically pay Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30 on top. Since both are MoRs, processing is bundled into their percentage.
What is a Merchant of Record (and why it matters here)
This is the detail most comparisons skip over. When a platform operates as a Merchant of Record (MoR), it is the legal seller in every transaction. The buyer's credit card statement shows the platform's name, not yours. The platform collects the payment, handles chargebacks, and pays you out after deducting its fees. With both Lemon Squeezy and Gumroad, you do not connect your own Stripe account — the platform processes every payment through its own infrastructure.
What you gain
- Simpler setup — no Stripe account to create, no payment processor onboarding, no payment infrastructure to manage.
- Chargeback protection — since the platform is the legal seller, chargebacks are generally its problem, not yours.
- Some compliance handled — the MoR takes on certain tax and regulatory obligations, reducing (but not always eliminating) your burden.
What you give up
- Payment ownership — the subscriber relationship lives on the platform's account. If you leave, those subscriptions do not follow you.
- Migration flexibility — moving means asking every subscriber to re-enter their payment details. Some will not bother.
- Payout control — the platform decides when and how you get paid. In rare cases, platforms can freeze payouts.

Features side by side
Both platforms cover the essentials. Here is where they overlap and where they differ.
What both platforms offer
- Digital downloads (PDFs, zip files, audio, video)
- Subscription and membership products
- Embeddable checkout overlays and widgets
- Affiliate programs, discount codes, and coupons
- No monthly fee — pay only when you sell
Lemon Squeezy advantages
- Software license keys — built-in license key generation and validation for desktop software, plugins, and licensed digital products.
- SaaS billing — usage-based billing, trial periods, and advanced subscription management that go beyond simple recurring payments.
- Developer-friendly API — a well-documented REST API and webhooks for integrating with custom applications and automating workflows.
- Comprehensive global tax handling — collects and remits sales tax, VAT, and GST globally as part of its MoR service. This is one of its primary selling points and a genuine advantage over Gumroad.
- Modern checkout design — a polished, customizable checkout experience that converts well on mobile.
Gumroad advantages
- Discover marketplace — a product marketplace where buyers browse and find products organically. No other platform in this space offers comparable built-in discovery (though marketplace sales cost 30% instead of 10%).
- Built-in email marketing — email broadcast and automation tools let you email buyers directly from the platform without a separate service.
- Larger existing community — Gumroad has been around since 2011 with a large creator community, more shared knowledge, tutorials, and third-party integrations.
- Longer track record — over a decade of operation gives some sellers confidence when choosing where to host their business.
Tax and compliance
Tax handling is where the two platforms genuinely diverge. The MoR model gives both a legal basis to collect and remit tax on your behalf, but the extent to which each platform actually does so differs significantly.
Lemon Squeezy: comprehensive tax handling
Lemon Squeezy positions global tax compliance as a core part of its service. As Merchant of Record, it collects and remits U.S. sales tax (calculated at checkout based on the buyer's location), EU VAT (including varying rates across member states), and GST/HST for countries like Australia and Canada. This is one of Lemon Squeezy's strongest selling points and a legitimate reason many sellers choose it.
Gumroad: partial tax handling
Gumroad transitioned to a full Merchant of Record model in January 2025 and began handling more tax collection than it did previously. However, the scope of Gumroad's tax coverage is more limited than what Lemon Squeezy offers. If comprehensive global tax handling is a priority, this is a meaningful difference between the two platforms.
An important caveat for both
Even with a Merchant of Record handling tax collection, your own filing obligations may still exist. The MoR model reduces your compliance burden but does not always eliminate it entirely. Depending on where you live and which jurisdictions you have nexus in, you may still need to register, file returns, or maintain records. If you are unsure, consult a tax professional. The trade-off both platforms share: payment ownership
This is what most comparisons leave out. Because both Lemon Squeezy and Gumroad are Merchants of Record, neither lets you own your payment infrastructure. There is no "connect your Stripe account" option. Every payment goes through the platform's own processing, and the subscriber relationship lives on the platform's side.
What this means in practice
- Subscribers are tied to the platform — if you build a subscription business and later decide to move, your active subscriptions cannot transfer. Each subscriber would need to re-enter payment information.
- Revenue history stays behind — payment analytics and history belong to the platform. You get reporting within the dashboard, but you cannot take that data to a new provider.
- Platform risk — if either platform changes terms, raises prices, or shuts down, you are more exposed than you would be with your own payment account. Some creators have reported difficulty migrating off MoR platforms.
When this trade-off works — and when it does not
If you sell one-time digital downloads — ebooks, templates, design assets — the ownership question is less critical. You get a simpler setup and the platform handles chargebacks. For subscription-based businesses, the stakes are higher: losing subscribers during a platform migration can mean losing a significant portion of your income. If you are building a SaaS product or a membership community, consider whether you want that revenue tied to a platform you do not control.
Which should you choose?
Both are capable platforms. The right choice depends on what matters most to you.
Choose Lemon Squeezy if:
- Lower per-sale fees matter — at 5% + $0.50 vs 10% + $0.50, the savings add up. On a $50 product, you keep $2.50 more per sale.
- You sell software or SaaS — license key generation, usage-based billing, and a developer-friendly API make it a strong choice for software.
- Tax compliance is a priority — Lemon Squeezy's global tax collection and remittance is genuinely comprehensive.
- You want a modern developer experience — well-documented APIs, webhooks, and integrations that work well for technical sellers.
Choose Gumroad if:
- You value marketplace discovery — the Discover marketplace can surface your products to buyers who were not looking for them specifically.
- You want built-in email tools — email marketing features mean one less subscription to manage when starting out.
- Community and track record matter — Gumroad has been around since 2011 with a large, active creator community and extensive shared knowledge.
Whichever you choose, go in understanding the MoR trade-off: you gain simplicity and some compliance coverage, but you give up ownership of the payment relationship. For one-time download sellers, that is usually fine. For subscription businesses, weigh the decision carefully.
An alternative approach
If you want payment ownership and tax compliance without choosing between them, a different category of platform exists. Instead of acting as Merchant of Record, these platforms let you connect your own Stripe account — keeping your subscribers, revenue data, and payment relationship under your control — while still handling tax calculation, collection, and reporting on your behalf. SurcoPay is building exactly this, with early access coming soon.
