What a sale actually costs

The numbers at real price points, with every fee broken out. Stripe's processing fee goes to Stripe; SurcoPay's 4.5% goes to us. Sales tax is yours in full — we never deduct against it.

Sale price Stripe (2.9% + 30¢) SurcoPay (4.5%) You keep
$9 $0.56 $0.41 $8.03
$19 $0.85 $0.86 $17.29
$29 $1.14 $1.31 $26.55
$49 $1.72 $2.21 $45.07
$99 $3.17 $4.46 $91.37
$499 $14.77 $22.46 $461.77

Stripe rates shown are for US cards on Stripe's standard pricing. International cards, currency conversion, and alternative payment methods have their own rates set by Stripe. SurcoPay's 4.5% doesn't change with any of those.

What we don't charge for

How it stacks up on a $29 sale

Three paths to the same checkout, with the actual money that reaches your bank on each. Competitor rates are approximate and based on each platform's publicly stated pricing at the time of writing — check them before deciding.

Platform Fee structure (approx.) You keep on a $29 sale
SurcoPay (Free) 4.5% + Stripe's 2.9% + 30¢ ~$26.55
Gumroad (flat plan) ~10% + Stripe's 2.9% + 30¢ ~$24.96
Shopify Basic ~$39/mo + ~2.9% + 30¢ (Shopify Payments) ~$27.86 — but minus $39/mo until you cover it
Paddle (MoR) ~5% + 50¢ (all-in, tax handled) ~$27.05 — minus your own tax tooling if you don't use them

Shopify's monthly plan is the one line that changes this picture meaningfully as volume grows — above roughly $400–500/month in revenue, the per-sale math starts to favor Shopify over Gumroad. SurcoPay stays flat at 4.5% at every volume. See our Shopify vs Gumroad and Stripe vs Paddle guides for the full breakdowns.

Pricing questions

Is SurcoPay really free?

There is no monthly fee and nothing to pay until you sell something. When you do, SurcoPay takes a flat 4.5% of your product price. Stripe bills you its own processing rates (~2.9% + 30¢) directly. Fees never apply to sales tax, and if you refund a sale we refund our fee with it.

What does the 4.5% cover?

The checkout widget, hosted checkout pages, buyer-facing download pages, license-key delivery, email receipts, refund tooling, tax calculation at checkout, update pushes, and the dashboard. Stripe's processing fees go to Stripe — we never charge our own margin on top of Stripe's rates.

Does SurcoPay take a fee on sales tax?

No. Our 4.5% applies only to your product price. The sales tax collected at checkout passes through to you in full for remittance — we never deduct a fee against it, which would leave you under-funded for filing.

What if I refund a sale?

Our 4.5% is returned to you in full on a refund. On a partial refund, our fee is reduced proportionally. Stripe's processing fee is subject to Stripe's own refund rules — for most card types, Stripe does not return their processing fee on a refunded sale.

Is there a per-sale minimum fee?

No per-sale minimum from SurcoPay. The 4.5% is proportional at every price point. Stripe has its own 30¢ fixed fee per successful card charge, which is separate from our rate.

When will the Pro plan be available?

Pro is in development and does not have a launch date yet. The Free plan is not going away, and its 4.5% is not going up when Pro arrives. Existing Free sellers keep their current rate when Pro launches — Pro is simply the option that removes the per-sale fee in exchange for a monthly one.

Are there transaction limits?

No. Unlimited transactions on the Free plan. The only limits are the ones your payment provider sets.

Can I change my price or product count later?

Yes. Change prices anytime. The Free plan is capped at 5 products; Pro will remove that cap when it ships. If you need more than 5 before Pro arrives, email us — we're onboarding sellers one conversation at a time right now and that's a conversation we're happy to have.
